Vila Flor

Vila Flor, a place of tradition and long rich history, is located at over 500 meters high, surrounded by beautiful vineyards and olive tree fields.

The legend says that king D. Dinis (1279 to 1325), on his way to Miranda, to meet his fiancée - Isabel of Aragão - found this place to beautiful and flowered that called it “Flor” (flower).

Some sources admit that the foundation of Vila Flor was made in the 11th century, after the decay of the Moorish invasions and of the beginning of the Christian repopulation of the territory.

The Vila Flor appears in reference for the first time in 1286, when king D. Dinis ordered the construction of the location defensive walls and doors.

The religious and residential heritage, the landscapes and natural sites of rare beauty, make of Vila Flor a wonderful place for leisure moments. Highlights such as the Roman Fountain from the 1500’s, the Rua Nova (one of the most ancient streets in the village), the D. Dinis Arch, the traditional Rua do Saco street where can be found many traditional small houses, and other monuments such as the Aguillares Manor house dated from the 12th and 14th centuries housing nowadays the Municipal Museum, presenting painting, archaeology, ethnography, African handicraft, holy art, among other interesting collections.

The Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew was built in replacement of a previous one that was demolished in 1708. It is essentially Baroque, with the collateral altars covered in rich golden carved wood from the 17th century, brought from Falperra, in Braga.
In the interior is the Our Lady of Piety Chapel.

The Misericórdia Church is located on the Rossio Square. In this place there seems to have been, by the time of the locality’s foundation, a chapel.

Next to the historical centre is located the Rossio Square, where one can observe some manor houses, the Misericórdia Church and the well in the centre dating from 1861.

The Raúl Sá Correia Manor House is considered to be one of the best manor houses of the district. It is an architectonic jewel from the 18th century.

The Town Hall building, dating from the 1940’s is located on the Marechal Carmona Avenue, next to the Cultural Centre.

Also quite beautiful is the Nossa Senhora da Lapa Mount, from where one has an amazing panorama, a snack park and a children’s park, perfect for leisure moments.
