Arquinho Roman Bridge

Valpaços

Information

The Roman Bridge of Arquinho, also known as Possacos Pontão is situated in the lovely Possacos settlement, on the delightful Valpaços department, over the enchanting Calvo River valley.

This historical construction probably dates back from the 1st century a.C., by the time of the Roman occupancy of the territory, integrating the 17th Main Road of the Roman Empire, that would link ‘Bracara Augusta’ (Braga) to ‘Asturica Augusta’ (Astorga, in Spain).
Here were found several Roman milestones attributed to the Emperors Maximino and Máximo, showing off the historical and archaeological importance of this monument.

The Bridge is characterized by its plain roadway with 7,5 meters width, over its one only round arch.
