Santa Clara Convent Ruins

Amarante

Information

Set on fire in 1809 during the French Invasions, the Santa Clara Convent, in Amarante, is nowadays in ruins, remaining only part of the Chapel and the renaissance Portal.

It is thought that this convent was built between the 16th and 18th centuries, housing the Clarisse nuns that contributed much for the traditional Amarante sweets and pastry.

Classified as a Public Interest Building since 1974, it is still visible the decoration with rosettes sculpted in panels that sustain the chapel’s vault.
