Description

The Pousada Vila Óbidos – the first Pousadas de Portugal Bed & Breakfast – and Casa Lidador, a pioneering Portuguese travel experience, provide an innovative way to experience life within the walled town of Óbidos.

The Pousada Vila Óbidos, 200 metres from the Castle, is an authentictraditional Óbidos house from the 18th century, with 17 comfortable rooms and a courtyard.

Casa Lidador, also 200 metres from the Castle, is a restoration of the first Pousada built in the 1940s, providing 11 rooms, a shared kitchen and anoutdoor swimming pool.

Virtually equidistant from each other, the three buildings (the Castle, Vila Óbidos and Casa Lidador) of Pousadas de Portugal in Óbidos all share a Receptionand Restaurants within the Castle. They are all excellent starting points to explore the charming town, with its medieval streets and white facades decorated with flowers, or to try the iconic Ginjinha de Óbidos (morello cherry liqueur) and the various cultural and adventure activities available in the region.

TIP: We recommend the use of a small suitcase, because Casa Lidador can only be accessed on foot.

HISTORY
First opened in 1940, the Estalagem do Lidador was a prototype built by the Portuguese national promotion authority, a kind of model hotel which preceded the official opening of the pousadas network. Casa do Lidador was named after Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, known as O Lidador (The Leader), a captain under King Afonso Henriques. In a constant bid to restore heritage, the Pestana Hotel Group restored the old Estalagem do Lidador inn, as well as the 18th century building in the centre of Óbidos, creating innovative Charming Pousadas.

The walled village goes back to the times before nationality itself existed. The village was conquered by the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Over the centuries, it formed part of the successive queens’ dowries and was bequeathed [to the nation]: in 1498 Queen Leonor built the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy) and its Church and Hospital. Decades later, D. Catarina had the aqueduct and fountains built for the village. The well-preserved medieval ambience, the beauty of the region, and its proximity to Lisbon and several other places of interest, tend to attract more and more visitors. In a continual effort to restore heritage, the Pestana Group reconverted a building located in the village centre into the Pousada Charming.

ROOMS
The Pousada Vila Óbidos has 17 simple and cosy rooms, with a relaxed environment that brings you closer to the everyday life of Óbidos. It provides a more independent and authentic stay.

Casa Lidador features 10 double rooms and 1 family room, with a rustic and relaxed atmosphere, distinguished by its simplicity, free from any ostentation or luxury. All the charm of the old inn, with the flower pots on the porch and whitewashed walls, has been restored in a more contemporary style, suitable for today’s travellers.

RESTAURANT AND SERVICES
Being the first Bed & Breakfast in the Pousadas de Portugal network, the Vila Óbidos serves excellent breakfast in an informal and welcoming atmosphere. For main meals, we invite you to try the restaurant at the Pousada Castelo de Óbidos, a benchmark for restoration in the region, just 3 minutes away.

Casa Lidador is the ideal choice for the hottest months of the year. Unwind by the outdoor swimming pool and make your own meals in the shared kitchen, while cohabiting with the other guests. The Reception of the Pousada Vila Óbidos and Casa Lidador is located in Pousada do Castelo.

Divided into 2 buildings, the Pousada Vila Óbidos offers a relaxing stay and more authentic experience in closer proximity to local people.

DESTINATION AND LOCATION
Óbidos is one of the country’s main tourist destinations, a walled village that has kept its medieval character unchanged, with stone pavements and whitewashed houses. The authentic local commerce, its proximity to Lisbon and the Atlantic coast, as well as the variety of markets and festivals that the municipality promotes throughout the year, all make Óbidos a place not to be missed. This hotel in the village of Óbidos is just 3 minutes’ walk from Castle of Óbidos, which is considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal and the first national monument to be part of the Pousada de Portugal network.
