HISTORY
This ancient palace was ordered to be built by Dom Dinis for his wife, Queen Santa Isabel, who gives the Pousada its name. Located on the city's old stronghold, it was the scene of battles, love and betrayal.
Under the control of Queen Santa Isabel, who passed away in 1336, Estremoz became one of the main political centres of the kingdom, welcoming important figures and serving as an important royal political forum throughout the end of the first dynasty. At the beginning of the 20thcentury, in 1910, the castle grounds, the town walls, the Torre das Couraças and the Capela da Rainha Santa were classified as a National Monument.
