Aljubarrota Battle Interpretation Centre
Information
The Aljubarrota Battle took place in the São Jorge battle field, near Leiria and Alcobaça, in 1385 between the Portuguese and the Castilian forces, resulting on the defeat of the Castilians, and putting an end in the deep 1383-85 crisis.
The Aljubarrota Battle Interpretation Centre is a project which includes the almost entire São Jorge Military Museum adaptation and alteration, where the Battle was fought on the 14th August 1385.
The recovery and valorisation process began in 2002, since then the Aljubarrota Battle Foundation realized that the key element for success would be the construction of an Interpretation Centre which, in a rigorous and instructive manner, could describe the different aspects of the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Hence, through frequent dialogue with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of National Defence, it obtained funding from the ERDP (European Regional Development Fund) attributed in compliance with the Operation Programme for Culture, adapting the former Military Museum into an Interpretation Centre on the Battle of Aljubarrota.
This Interpretation Centre was also conceived to create an ever greater connection with the surrounding landscape and plans have been made to gradually recover it as close as possible to what it was like in 1385.
Visitors will have the opportunity to visit the Battlefield of Aljubarrota, becoming familiar with the places where the most important facts took place during the Battle.
The Centre assembles an exhibition area dedicated entirely to the battle, educational services and workshops, a temporary exhibitions area, a shop and also restaurant service.
