Cascais

Cascais is a cosmopolitan suburb of Lisboa and one of the richest municipalities in Portugal.
The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal's royal family in the late 1800s and early 1900s. After the Second World War an elevated number of refugees and exiled were received in Cascais, among them many important personalities such as king Humberto the 2nd from Italy, Carol 2nd of Romania, the Counts of Barcelona, among many others from the cultural and sportive world.
Nowadays there is a large yacht harbour and several delightful sandy beaches in and around the town, in an area of about 15km long.
Cascais is also becoming a popular golf destination, with over 10 golf courses nearby. Surfing, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are also popular in the region around Cascais due to the favourable weather, wind and sea conditions.
The city centre is an old and colourful fishermen town, with small urban beaches coloured by the charming boats, with unique cobbled streets and houses, all perfectly maintained and important monuments and several highlights such as the Largo 5 de Outubro where is located the Condes da Guarda Manor house that nowadays lodges the city council; the gorgeous Cascais bay and all its magic; the Marina; the Citadela and the Cultural Centre that is situated in the beautiful old Convent of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, dating from the 16th century.
Cascais also has a great Museum variety and quality, and the Museu do Mar (Sea Museum) and the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum are worth the visit.
With a strong Tourism industry, Cascais has different kinds and prices of accommodation, then again it is known for the prestige tourism, with top-quality hotels and services.
The Gastronomy of this region is very rich and tasty, with several Restaurants, Cafeterias and Bars for the most exquisite tastes.
