Santa Marta de Penaguião

Santa Marta de Penaguião is a lovely village from the north of Portugal, situated in the amazing Douro Demarcated Wine Region, characterized by the luxuriant surrounding nature with vineyards fields distributed in the mountain terraces.

Santa Marta de Penaguião presents several vestiges of ancient human occupancy, with many hill forts throughout the region, like in Fontes, Lobrigos, Cumieira, Louredo and Medrões.
It was with the creation of the Douro Demarcated Wine Region the village starts developing and increasing its importance and wealth.
Santa Marta de Penaguião is surrounded by an astonishing landscape marked by the mountain sculpted vineyards terraces and by the lovely Corgo river, enriched by the lovely village’s heritage, like its Parish Church, the Pillory or the many wind and water mills present throughout the region, many of them communitarian.

Marking the importance of the vineyards and of the creating of the Demarcated region, are several Manor Houses, with many baroque elements, built during the 17th and 18th centuries, like the Solar Pinheiros or the Quinta Bertelo.

Santa Marta de Penaguião traditions are quite attached to the wine production, as one can observe on its Handmade products, mainly in what concerns to basketry and cooperage techniques as well as tapestry and lacework that were used for serving sweets, pastries and Port Wine.
