Sernancelhe
The region has several vestiges of ancient human occupation, since pre-historical times, and has also vestiges of the Roman and Moorish occupation, having been re-conquered by the Christian in the 11th century.
Throughout the region there is a large number of manor houses and small palaces, like the baroque Carvalhos’s Solar, the Casa do Paço or Casa da Loba, the Casa dos Condes da Lapa or the Casa da Comenda da Malta, denoting the agricultural and commercial importance of this area that produces renowned wines, chestnuts and potatoes.
The most significant monument in the village is the amazing Romanesque Mother Church, dating from the 12th century, but also the lovely Pillory from 1554 and what is nowadays left of the Castle with quite ancient origins, reconstructed by the Order of Malta that has marked all the history of this region.
Around Sernancelhe’s surroundings several settlements are worth to be known, like Vila da Ponte, Macieira, Sarzeda, Fonte da Arcada and Lapa with its famous Sanctuary located in up in the mountain and where one of the most notorious and colourful religious Procession takes place.
The handicraft of the region is known for its works in Granite and Tin, being also Sernancelhe famous for its much appreciated Gastronomy with special products like sausages and smoked ham, meat cake and the typical chestnut soup.
