Sousel
The historical information of this location is scarce, although there are some vestiges of ancient human occupation in the region.
Sousel is an ancient settlement, with narrow typical streets, characterized by its agricultural and animal husbandry, with few industries and a crescent tourist feature, namely in what concerns to accommodation and traditional commerce, offering many activities and the contact with the surrounding nature.
Among the typical Alentejo’s streets, one can find in Sousel the religious devotion of other times, like in the beautiful Nossa Senhora da Orada Church dating from the 15th century, on the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (16th century), on the Misericórdia Church (17th century) or in the Santo António Convent Church dated from 1605. It is said that in the Álamo Tower lived for some time the considered to be greatest Portuguese Poet Luís de Camões (1524-1580) and that is why this Tower is often known as “Camões Tower”.
In Sousel tradition is still very cherished, mainly in the handicraft work with ancient techniques and materials, like tapestry, dried flowers, leather, shoes and the colourful decorative Alentejo’s painture in wooden objects.
The Gastronomy is also typical from the Alentejo region, with several bread-based specialities like the “Açorda” and “Ensopado“, or the Tomato Soup, or the many Game recipes, for this is an area of hunt.
