guide to visit

Vimioso

Vimioso is located in the northeast Trás-os-Montes region (literally meaning “behind the hills”), on a plateau in between the lovely Maçãs and Angueira rivers, and plain grounds with agricultural fields where are cultivated olive trees, almond trees, vineyards and other beautiful species.

The Vimioso’s economy is based on agriculture and cattle-breeding, which have been decreasing drastically.

The small villages that confine with the Miranda do Douro department are all quite influenced by a special accent, typical of this Mirandês plateau.

Every year, on the 10th of August, takes place the São Lourenço Fair, with an ancient agricultural and cattle-breeding tradition, where the cattle was trade for years, specially the pure Mirandês bovines.
Nowadays, in that day, takes place a cattle-breeding competition, with Mirandês animals, specially bulls. The bullfight is usually part of the São Lourenço Festivity.

The smoked ham and sausages produced in the region is known for its high quality, once there one must try the “alheiras” or “tabafeias”, the “chouriça”, the “salpicão”, the “butelo” or the “chaviano”.
