Located at about 3 km distance from the charming Ponta Delgada city centre, the João Paulo II Airport is the main entrance way in the amazing São Miguel Island, on the Azores Archipelago.

Inaugurated in 1969, this Airport is nowadays prepared to serve the international airway traffic, with the capacity for 750.000 passengers per year, being presently, nevertheless, in expansion for the future capacity of 1.250.000 passengers per year.

Nowadays, the João Paulo II Airport assures the regular and regional routes with Lisbon, Oporto, Funchal and the Islands of Santa Maria, São Jorge, Lajes, Horta, Pico and Flores.
Previously named as Nordela Airport, it received the present designation in homage to the passage and blessing of Pope John Paul II by the São Miguel Island in 1991.
