Alcongosta is a typical mountainside village, right in the heart of the wonderful Gardunha mountain, nearby Fundão, in the Central Region of the Country, situated in a verdant place blessed by nature, famous for its big production of Cherries and twig basketry.

The village is surrounded by verdant and flowered cherry, chest nut and pine tree fields, offering wonderful landscapes, specially during Spring time.

Even though there are not many historical information over the origins of this settlement, it has been supposedly, occupied by man in periods former to the Portuguese Nationality. The toponym derives from the latin word “Congosta”, that means “narrow path”. Here passed the roman road that linked Alpedrinha to Alcongosta, which is still visible nowadays.

Alcongosta is proud of its mountainside typical streets and houses, surrounded by agricultural fields, and proud of its ancient traditions, that are quite visible in the traditional handicraft.
The village offers highlights such as the Casa da Guarda Manor House, from where one has an astonishing panorama, the Mother Church, the Chapels of Santa Barbara, São Sebastião and Espírito Santo, the referred Roman Road, the pleasant Alcongosta Park and Viewpoint in the Gardunha Mountain, and the many handicraft workshops that can be found all over the village, specialized in twig basketry and in the hand made musical instruments.
