Alqueva Dam

The Alqueva Dam is the biggest Dam in Portugal and its Reservoir is Europe’s largest.
It is situated in Guadiana River, right in the heart of inner Alentejo, nearby the Spanish border, with more than 1.000km of pleasant margins and several small islands.

The Alentejo region is the driest and hottest region in Portugal, with persistent droughts mainly during spring and summer time, therefore the construction of this massive Dam was to produce hydroelectric power, irrigation for farms in the surrounding area, as well as a large reservoir perfect for leisure and tourist activities and facilities.

Nowadays several activities are organized here, providing pleasant moments with nature, fun, leisure and relaxation, as well as different kinds of sports, like nautical or more extreme ones, fishing, hunting, pedestrian walks, biking, among many others.
