Braga is one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in Portugal, and also one of the most ancient Christian towns of the world, as well as one of the most important religious centres in the country.
Baptized by the Romans as Bracara Augusta, at the time of the Roman occupation it was the biggest town in the territory that nowadays is Portugal, Braga is also known as “City of the Archbishops” or even the “Portuguese Rome”.
In Braga one can run across religious architecture heritage on every corner, showing the Religious power of other times. The most important monument is probably Braga’s Romanesque Cathedral, the most ancient cathedral in the country.
Braga was also named as “Barroque City” for its architectural and decorative wealth, mainly for its 18th century constructions or restoration works, which transformed Braga in one of the most important artistic centers in the country.
Not to be missed are the Sanctuaries that surround Braga: Bom Jesus Sanctuary, the Sameiro Sanctuary and the Falperra Sanctuary.
Wonderful parks and gardens, delightful manor houses and small palaces and all this Barroque influence and heritage provide a wonderful ambiance to Braga. Green dominates the landscape all over the region, with the Peneda-Gerês National Park just around the corner.
Braga is also considered one of the cities in Portugal with a great youth density, hence providing a lively environment all over, with Universities, Shows, Theatres, Shops, Bars and Restaurants all over.
