Roman Road of São Brás de Alportel

São Brás de Alportel

The “Calçadinha” (small pavement) de São Brás de Alportel is situated in the Algarve region and was once part of a road that integrated the important Roman road that left from “Ossonoba” (Faro) heading north, in direction to “Pax Julia” (Beja).

Nowadays are left conserved two pieces of the Roman Road, in an extension of 1.480 meters, separated by some meters once paved, but nowadays damaged.
This road was probably paved in order to overtake the natural obstacles, in areas of accentuated declivity and difficult soils.

On the “Calçadinha” environs were found some archaeological vestiges from the Roman occupancy period dated in as from the 1st century untill the 4th or 5th century a.C., attributed to a rest stop or even a stop for trading and horse care during the long trips.

For a better knowledge and publicizing of the importance of this heritage was created the Welcoming and Explicatory Centre of the Calçadinha of São Brás de Alportel.
This centre comprehends an exhibition room about the Calçadinha, a temporary exhibitions room, a space for study and research, a consulting room, and on the exterior a pleasant green area, perfect for diversified activities or leisure.

The Calçadinha also provides a pleasant pedestrian tour with about 5km extension.
