Castelo Novo Castle

Aldeia de Castelo Novo - Fundão

The Castelo Novo Castle would have been property of the Templar Military Order, which is also considered to be the responsible for the Castle construction in the 12th century, during the reign of king D. Sancho I (1185-1211).

King D. Dinis (1279-1325) in the end of the 14th century ordered the reinforcement of its defences and also during the reign of king D. Manuel I, around 1510, the Castle received some conservation works, yet it got into degradation as it was no longer in use.

With the big earthquake of 1755 the Castle, that was no longer in a very good state, got very destroyed, yet only in the 20th century it got some conservation works.
This is Castle is a good example of the military architecture of the Gothic and Manueline styles.
