Alcoutim Castle

The region of Alcoutim, that the archaeological researches confirm to have human occupation since prehistory, was conquered from the Arabs in the13th century, and a new castle started to be built, since Alcoutim is a border town and did not have any defences at the time.

Overlooking the river Guadiana, the castle of Alcoutim stands high upon a hill, with long walls that offer excellent views over the surrounding landscape.

During the Restoration War of the Portuguese Independence from Spain, after the year 1640, the defenses of the castle are improves in order to introduce artillery.

However, in the 20th century this fortress was already in ruins and received consolidation and conservation work.

The Alcoutim Castle was classified Monument of Public Interest in 1993, and currently houses an Archaeological Museum where one can notice the ancient human presence in the region and in the country.
