Santa Maria da Feira Castle

Santa Maria da Feira

Information

The Santa Maria da Feira Castle already existed when the Count D. Henrique received the Portucalense County, which started the very own Portuguese nationality, yet the region has been inhabited since pre-historical times, acquiring a bigger importance during the domination of the Lusitanos and afterwards with the Roman occupancy of the Iberian Peninsula.

During the reign of king D. Dinis (1279 to 1325) this Castle was stage to the fights between the king and his son, D. Afonso, in 1322.

The Castle’s present architecture has origins in the reign of king D. Afonso the 5th, around 1448, by the hand of the first Feira Count.
In the beginning of the 18th century a big fire devastated this Lord’s residence, originating a large period of abandon.

Classified as a National Monument, the Castle has had conservation works and is nowadays considered to be one of the most emblematic Portuguese medieval architecture structures.
