Castelo Melhor is a lovely rural small village nearby the wonderful Vila Nova de Foz Côa, with a delightful heritage, situated in a region of great natural beauty, known as well for being one of the entrances for the Côa Valley Archaeological Park.

Castelo Melhor presents a superb engraved Rupestrian drawings heritage, of great importance and interest, namely in the nucleus of Broeira, Fonte Frieira, Meijapão, Penascosa, Vale dos Namorados, Canada da Moreira and of Canada do Amendoal.

Hence, this is a region occupied by man since quite remote times, as it is observable not only in the engraved Rupestrian drawings as well as in the many other vestiges of human occupancy dater from the Cooper and the Bronze Age, and afterwards from the Roman occupancy period, like the vestiges of a road in Penacosca or the Roman Villa in Orgal.
Suevis, Visigoths and Moors also left their influence in this territory.

This peaceful mountainside village delights all its visitors that find in these typical streets of traditional rural houses built in stone the peace of mind and tranquillity of a village with a rich and ancient history, with monuments such as its Castle, the Mother Church, the Santa Bárbara Chapel or the Chapel and View Point of São Gabriel that provides an astonishing panorama.
