Castelo Novo

Aldeia de Castelo Novo - Fundão

Information

The existence of Castelo Novo as a locality is officially represented in documents since the early times of the Portuguese nationality.
The village is the entrance card to the amazing Gardunha Mountain and was classified as “Historical Village”, nowadays with a lovely ambiance marked by rural and environmental tourism.

The greateast highlights in Castelo Novo are the Castle (which is believed to be built by Templar Military Order in the 13th century), the Parish House (from the beginning of the 20th century), the Mother Church (in Pombaline style, dated from 1732) and the Fundeiro Fountain from the 13th/14th century.

There was once nearby the locality an old castle from which only some vestiges are now left. It is thought that here existed a small locality named as Alpreada that was transferred to the present Castelo Novo locality due to a ants invasion.
