Capuchos Convent

Serra de Sintra - Sintra

Capuchos Convent, also known as Santa Cruz or the Cork Convent, is situated in the forest, in Sintra’s Mountain Range, 9 km from the city centre.
The Convent, built in 1560 by Dom Álvaro de Castro in Mannerist style, is all covered with cork in order to prevent humidity infiltrations in the wall. In fact, everything in this convent reveal the advanced knowledge of the Franciscan Friars for their time.
The primary Franciscan order had an humble and austere existence, with poverty, chastity and obedience, and this Convent is a perfect example of that philosophy, with tiny cells, a little chapel, refectory and other dependencies, all very small and minimal.
