Santiago Fort

The Santiago Fort is situated in a place of great natural beauty: the gorgeous Sesimbra bay, towering over the village’s beach, and is also known as Marinha Fort, Praia Fort or even Santiago Fortress.

The structure was erected in 1648 considered to be the most important fortification of the Sesimbra bay, probably built over a previous edification from the 16th century that, for the large amount of attacks and destruction was already in ruins.
The present structure was projected by João Cosmander, and as from 1712 was the headquarters of the Military and Ammunition Government and was also destined to serve as summer residence of the Portuguese Princes.
The Santiago Fort was classified as a Public Interest Monument in 1977.
