São Brás Fort ( Ponta Delgada )

Ponta Delgada - Ponta Delgada ( Açores )

Information

Located on the beautiful town of Ponta Delgada, the capital of the amazing São Miguel Island and of the wonderful Azores Archipelago, the São Brás Fort or Castle is the most important exemplar of military architecture from the 16th century on the Island, housing nowadays the interesting Military Museum of the Azores.

Already in the 16th century it was clear that the São Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico islands were the most strategically vulnerable Islands for Pirates attacks and despoils, along with the economical and urban development of the localities.

The construction o the Fort began in 1551, under the plan of Manuel Machado, and was reformulated in 1553 by Isidoro de Almeida. The project was later changed, namely in 1560 and 1567, and during the Spanish occupancy period, entering in decay as from the 17th century.
The 19th century was the period of great economical and urban development of the Ponta Delgada town, which lead to the Fort conservation works and the increase of its artillery.
As from the 1940’s, the Fort receives the headquarters of the Military Command of the Azores and since 1999, houses the important Military Museum of the Azores.
