Santana do Campo Church

Arraiolos, Santana do Campo - Arraiolos

Information

Located in the picturesque small village of Santana do Campo, in the Arraiolos department, in the wide Alentejo region, this temple, classified as a National Monument, was built on the 15th century over a previous Roman Temple.

According to several researches, this small village seems to be built over the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement, being nowadays the Church the main highlight of that period.

The previous temple would date from the 2nd or 3rd century a.C., and part of its ruins are still visible nowadays on the high altar of the Church. On the 15th century the Christian Temple was built and later received some conservation and restoration works.
