São Cristovão Church

Lisboa

Information

The São Cristóvão Church is situated in the top of the picturesque São Cristóvão Stairway (“Escadinhas”) in the heart of the historical centre of Lisboa, where the ancient essence of Lisboa is still present.

A previous church was built in the beginning of the 13th century consecrated to Our Lady of Alcamim, yet it was quite destroyed in a big fire on the 16th century.
In 1610 the Temple was rebuilt and quite altered , opening to the cult only in 1672.

The main façade presents a Mannerist architectonical style, typical of the 17th century, with a portal in the centre and an image of São Cristóvão.
The temple’s interior presents an only nave with the walls and ceilings covered delightful panels framed with golden carved wood.
