Situated in the traditional Alfama old quarter, in the historical centre of Lisboa, the São Miguel Church has quite ancient origins, probably dating to the beginning of the Portuguese Nationality, in the 12th century.
Nevertheless the present building was erected over the original, in between 1673 and 1720, under the direction of the renowned architect João Nunes Tinoco.

The Church presents a Mannerist and Baroque architectonic style, with two bell towers, an interior with one only nave, with sixteen paintings attributed to Bento Coelho.
The church is also profusely decorated with golden carved wood, an important feature of the Baroque period, that provides a prosperous and nobility to the space.

The São Miguel Church is classified as a Public Interest Building since 1982.
