São Salvador Church

The lovely and monumental São Salvador Church and the adjacent Convent is nowadays the Mother Church of the wonderful Faial Island, on the amazing Azores Archipelago.

The Temple’s construction was probably initiated in 1680, integrated on the Jesuits College, and were prolonged for some years, and even by the time the Jesuits were expelled from the territory, the construction works were not yet finished.
Nevertheless, this is a wealthy Church, with an interesting heritage, enriched with a profusion of golden carved wood, the Boa Morte, São Paulo, Nossa Senhora and Santíssimo Chapels, relics, glazed tiles, wooden images of great value, among many other treasures.

The remaining Convent structures house nowadays the Horta Museum, with a rich collection, mainly dedicated to the Faial Island’s History and facts.
