Mexilhoeira Grande

Portimão

Information

Mexilhoeira Grande is a peaceful rural village in the Portimão department, on the Touristic Algarve region, characterized by its charming typical white houses with a coloured bar around windows and doors, with the traditional Algarve’s chimneys, showing off the big Moorish influence, not only because of the proximity with the North of Africa, but also by the many years of Moorish occupancy of the territory.

This is a region of quite ancient human occupancy, as it is visible in the Pre-historic set of Alcalar and by the proximity of the Abicada’s Roman Station.

Together with this wealthy archaeological heritage, the village has maintained its typical rural environment, betting on the ancient Handicraft techniques, made with regional products and with a large production here, despite all the surrounding urban and touristic development and the proximity with the important town of Portimão.

Mexilhoeira Grande is proud of its Mother Church dated back from the 15th/16th centuries, of the Misericórdia Church and the lovely Nossa Senhora dos Paços Chapel originally integrated in one of the many Estates that surrounded the village, characterized by its modest Baroque style.
