Joaquim Agostinho was the most notable Portuguese cyclist, born on April 7, 1943 in Brejenjas, Torres Vedras.

He began cycling at Sporting Clube de Portugal, the team that discovered him training near Casalinhos de Alfaiata. He died on 10 May 1984, after 10 days in a coma as a result of a crash in the Tour of Algarve.

The Monument to Joaquim Agostinho was inaugurated on 3 July 1988, four years after his death, and it is signed by the sculptor Soares Branco and the architect Leopoldo S. Branco.

The bike was made by João António, a local craftsman known as "Coppi".
