Royal Palace of Caxias

Caxias - Oeiras

Information

The construction of this Palace was initiated by order of the Infant D. Francisco, son of the King D. Pedro the 2nd and of D. Maria Sofia Neuburg. However, the Infant passed away in 1742, before the conclusion of the construction of the Palace and the gardens that lasted until the beginning of the 19th century.
The Palace was often utilized by the Royalty as a Summer residence, or as a perfect place for dinner and royal parties.
Although this is a very representative monument of the sophisticated social life of the 18th century it is not a very elaborated building. In fact, it has quite sober lines where glazed tiles are often utilized.
The building nowadays is property of the Portuguese Army, and only the attractive gardens are available to visitors.
