Pico Alto

Pico Alto is the highest place on the wonderful Santa Maria Island, on the astonishing Azores Archipelago.
Located at about 590 meters above the sea level, on the eastern third of the Island, from the Pico Alto one has an astonishing panorama throughout the Island, and even on good days, it is possible to obeserve the neighbour São Miguel Island.

In fact, from here one can observe the surprising landscape differences that, in such a reduced area, change from profusely vegetation mounts to an arid coastal area with a plain geography.

Quite often surrounded by clouds, due to the constant and intense humidity, and the wind blowing at this altitude, the Pico Alto has usually attached to a mystic feature, that charms all visitors and has several legends and myths associated.
