Alfundão's Bridge

Ferreira do Alentejo

Situated in one of the most ancient villages of the vast Alentejo region (Alfundão), this old bridge and pavement show off the importance that the Roman occupancy had in this region.

Locals name this bridge as “Roman bridge”, yet it might have been built after the Roman occupancy period but with materials from the Roman period, or even built over a Roman edification.

In fact, the toponym of Alfundão is associated to the Roman presence in the region, deriving from the latin word “Fundana”: a family of this epoch. Probably the Moorish occupancy later added the “al” originating the term “Alfundão”.
