Tavira Roman Bridge

Tavira

Information

Also known as Ponte Antiga (Ancient Bridge) it is one of the Tavira symbols.
There are several theories about its origin, the most probable being the existence of a previous Roman Bridge from the 3rd century a.C and it got reconstructed, or another bridge was built in the same spot, in the beginning of the medieval period, that is why some name this bridge as the “Romanesque Bridge”.
Linking the two margins of Gilão river, right in the centre of Tavira, this Bridge has, therefore, suffered several during the centuries, having this design since the 17th century.
Nowadays this Bridge is a mandatory visit by its beauty and asymmetry, granting a Tavira’s gorgeous landscape.
