Portagem's Old Bridge

Situated in the Portagem settlement, nearby Marvão, the Old Portagem’s Bridge is located over the Sever river, in an area of great beauty.

The existence of another bridge over this river allows the formation of a pleasant natural swimming pool, quite appreciated and frequented.

This bridge is even considered to be one of the most perfect engineering works known in Alentejo’s region and about its origins there are varied theories.
Locally known as “Roman Bridge” probably because of its proximity with the Roman Town of Ammaia, but also by the presence of roman materials in its surroundings.
Nevertheless other studies contest the fact that this is a bridge from the 16th century, probably built over another bridge dating from the Roman occupation period, or even built with materials and techniques inherited from the many roman vestiges of this area.
