Porches
Information
Porches is a lovely small village nearby Lagoa, situated in the much touristic Algarve region, famous for its handicraft and wine production and also by the faithful preservation and maintenance of the popular architecture of the region.
The village has quite ancient origins, with several archaeological vestiges since the remote Neolithic period. Porches was probable an important Roman villa, located closer to the coastline, and later developed in the present location.
With the production of its handicraft and the famous wine, Porches has been able to keep its rural environment, even though a crescent Tourist industry has been growing, housing several tourist resorts and tourist facilities.
Porches is proud of its heritage with monuments such as its lovely 16th century Mother Church, the ruins of the ancient Castle, probably with Moorish or even Roman origins, or even the Nossa Senhora da Rocha Fort, overlooking the ocean, in a place of great beauty, where is located the Nossa Senhora da Rocha Chapel, where it is said that a Virgin Mary apparition once happened.
In the village there are several potteries and handicraft shops that proudly show of the wonderful Porches production, that is also proud of its popular architecture, as one can attest in the gracious Algarve’s typical chimney with almost two floors.
