Queluz National Palace

Queluz - Sintra
Site

Information

The Queluz National Palace dates back from 1747, and represents one of the finest examples of 18th-century Portuguese architecture. The main part of the Palace was only finished, however, in 1758.
The Palace and its beautiful gardens are profusely decorated with baroque ornaments: an excellent example of the way of life of the baroque society of the 18th century.
Frequently compared with the Palace of Versailles, in France, the Queluz National Palace preserves, however, a strong Portuguese identity and continues to be one of Government favourite spaces for official receptions and international State leaders meetings.
The surrounding gardens are famous, embellished with fountains and ornamental ponds, where sparkling water spouts forth from mythological figures.
The Palace is situated next to the exit of the IC19, direction Lisboa-Sintra, in the detour to Queluz.
