Ruínas do Castelo de Messejana

The Castle of Messejana is situated on top of a hill near the Church, at an altitude of 219 meters and it is thought to have been built by the Romans. The Arab occupation rebuilt the castle, but the conquest of Messejana to the Moors, by D. Sancho II in 1235 took it back to ruin. The king D. Dinis restored it in 1288.

The castle had a stone wall all around, and a Tower wich was 10 meters high. We can still see the remains of the side facing the town. Considered one of the ex-libris of the village, the Ruins of the Castle and surrounding Messejana were classified as Property of Public Interest in 1992.

An essential visit.
