São Cucufate Roman Ruins

The São Cucufate Roman Ruins are dated from the 1st century a.C., and are considered to have been an agricultural centre that was developed until the 4th century, where the owner may have lived.

After the decay of the Roman Empire this place still remained inhabited, probably until the end of the 18th century. According to the archaeological researches, this area was also inhabited before the Roman occupancy of the territory, on continuous benefit of this fertile soils and water abundance.

Recently, in the surroundings of the ruins, was installed the São Cucufate vegetable-garden, in order to continue the agricultural tradition of the region. Also the archaeological station provides many cultural attractiveness.

In Vila de Frades is being created a Museum Nucleus to better preserve this important heritage and all its information.
