Santo Aleixo



Santo Aleixo is a small village in the Monforte department. Human occupancy in this territory started already in the Neolithic Period, with small agricultural and cattle-breeding communities.

Among Santo Aleixo’s heritage, the Largo dos Bicos and the Parish Church are the main highlights. The Largo dos Bicos us surrounded by lovely ancient houses and noble traditions. The Parish Church is located on the highest side of the village. It was built on the 18th century and was the first settlement’s nucleus, from where all the houses and streets were developed from.

In what concerns to handicraft, a symbol of the past that insist on disappearing, there are still some craftsmen, even though not that many: mainly working with cork and wood, embroidery, shoemakers and tailors.
