The Milagres (Miracles) Sanctuary started to be built in 1732, in honour to a miracle that, supposedly, Jesus had performed in this place.
Once this was one of the main religious pilgrimage places in the country, afterwards supplanted by the Fátima Sanctuary.
Its construction is mostly in Baroque style, and marble is the most utilized material, also decorated with glazed tiles panels, paintings, and several statues, and with a great Watch, which is probably the most important piece in the Sanctuary.
The Milagres Sanctuary had conservation and restoration works in the end of the 20th century, as it was quite damaged by the time.
To a better receive all visitors, a Welcoming Centre was created, providing information, open daily from 9am to 7pm, and with special conditions for groups.
The celebration of the Senhor Jesus dos Milagres is the highlight of the Sanctuary and happens every year on the second weekend of September and its very famous for its procession, attracting millions of visitors from all over the country.
