The São Roque Museum is located adjoining to the wonderful São Roque Church, situated in the typical Bairro Alto old quarter, in the heart of the historical centre of cosmopolitan Lisboa.

Opened to the public back in 1905, this is one of the richest and ancient Museums of the Portuguese capital. Recently the Museum received important conservation works, re-opening to the public in the end of 2008.

Mostly dedicated to the rich Sacred Art, The São Roque Museum presents a collection of Portuguese Sacred Art directly related to the São Roque Church and to the Society of Jesus. The collection is essentially composed by goldsmithery, vestments, sculpture, painting and amazing reliquaries, merging as well the wonderful collection of the São João Baptista Chapel, an unequal testimony of the Portuguese and European Art History, with a relevant Italian heritage from the 18th century.

This Museum also presents the Oriental Art, quite influenced by the Society of Jesus presence in the East side of the Globe.

The Sacred Art collection of this Museum constitutes one of the most complete and richest ones in the Country, competing along with many on an International level, combining pieces dated between the 16th and the 20th century.

The Museum offers a cafeteria, a gift shop, a wide area for the permanent exhibition divided into two nucleus: the one dedicated to the São Roque Church and another one dedicated to the Society of Jesus.

This Museum is properly equipped to receive people with reduced mobility.
