Information

Montalegre is situated on a plateau to the North of the Serra do Barroso mountains, in an area blessed by nature, where time seems to have stopped and tradition still is what it used to be. Montalegre region is located partially in the amazing Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Enclosed behind high mountain ranges, the accesses to this part of Portugal have always been difficult, and traditions and ways of living that have passed through countless generations are stronger in this Trás-os-Montes region.
All over the region there are archaeological vestiges of human occupancy since pre-historical times and here Celts, Visigoths, Suevis and, of course Roman lived and left an important heritage. Montalegre was also important during the Middle Ages for its strategic position.
The 14th century Castle and its Watchtower with 27 meters high, the Misericórdia Chapel and all the rural granite architecture are examples of this gorgeous region.
Nearby Montalegre there are several interesting small villages, monuments and places, and nowadays several quality Tourist accommodation and facilities are provided.
The handicraft of Montalegre’s region has been able to preserve its origins, and wooden objects, linen embroideries and needle laces can be easily found in the region.
The Gastronomy is also quite appreciated, and traditional, specially the very famous sausages and smoked-hams.
