Pitões das Júnias

Located right in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in the lovely Montalegre region, on the isolated Trás-os-Montes region, Pitões das Júnias is one of the most traditional and picturesque small villages in Trás-os-Mmontes, that has been able to maintain all over the centuries its low population density and its medieval look, with buildings made of stone. This is also one of the Tourist attractions of the region and is nowadays is provided with some rural Tourist accommodations.
The origin of the village is mixed with the Santa Maria das Júnias Monastery, situated in an isolated valley nearby the village, and probably founded on the year 1147. This monastery belonged to the Order of Cistercians (sometimes also called White Monks order) from the 13th century until the 19th century.
