Escalhão Old Bridge

Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo

Information

This beautiful monument over the Aguiar river is situated in between Escalhão small village and the historic Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo village, in a gorgeous bucolic landscape.

The origins of this bridge are lost in time. Supposedly it was built during the Roman occupancy period of the region, or even afterwards yet keeping the Roman architectonic tradition and style and using materials of that same period. Either way it is known that the bridge suffered a big restoration during the 14th century.

The bridge was also quite important for this “Trás-os-Montes” region (literally meaning “behind the hills”) as it was an important passageway for all the pilgrims that headed to Santiago de Compostela.

This bridge was classified as a National Monument on the 4th July 1922.
