Sabugueiro
Information
Sabugueiro is a small village located right in the Estrela Mountain Natural Park and is considered to be the highest Portuguese village, situated at about 1200 meters high.
With ancient origins, the village was initially formed by a settlement of provisory shelters used by shepherds that here found great pasture fields for their flock of sheep, in a place blessed by nature, with an unique beauty.
Here one can find astonishing waterfalls, amazing landscapes and a typical mountain vegetation that confers unique colours to all the set.
The village is composed by rural granite houses, simple, typical of this region. It houses a ethnographic museum in order to preserve the still strong tradition of this place, a communitary oven, and a lovely Mother Church.
Sabugueiro is known as a tourist centre, a place of passage and stoppage for all the Serra da Estrela visitors, mainly those who head for the “Torre”, the highest point in the mountain. The crescent amount of visitors has made possible the preservation and ascension of the production of the traditional local goods like the famous Serra cheese, the smoked ham and sausages, the honey, the quilts, the sheep wool tapestry, as well as the breed of the well known local dog breed: the Serra da Estrela dog.
