Miradeiro Arch

Elvas

Information

The Miradeiro Arch is one of the vestiges left from the original defensive walls built in Mud (a quite typical Moorish material) dating from the Islamic occupancy of the territory, probably dated from the 8th / 9th centuries.

It is thought that in the construction of this structure some materials from a previous Roman building were re-used.

The development of the urban area on the south side of this entrance in late periods may have blocked the need of a reinforcement of the Miradeiro Arch, therefore able to maintain this structure with no important alterations in the following centuries of the Islamic domination of the territory.
