Located in the lovely Alpendurada e Matos village, in the lovely Marco de Canaveses department, the Alpendurada Convent is an historical building overlooking the wonderful Douro river, in an area of great natural beauty, with much to see.

Even before the foundation of the Portuguese Nationality (12th century), this was already a place of passage by the many pilgrims on the way to Santiago Compostela and Rome, and was also an important trading centre, due to the proximity with the Douro river.

The Convent would have been founded in the 11th century, serving the Order of Saint Benedict. Even nowadays, in a totally different environment, the monks cells still maintain its austerity of other times.
Nowadays this lovely building is transformed into a luxury hotel, offering several services, yet maintaining its original and historical environment.

The Convent had several restoration and conservation works during the 17th and 18th centuries, yet it maintains many of its Romanesque initial elements, as it is observable in the Medieval kitchen, where nowadays are organized medieval dinners with professional animation.
