Flor da Rosa

Crato

Information

Flor da Rosa is a typical small village in the vast Alentejo region that has developed around an important Monastery, nearby the lovely Crato village.

According to tradition, the name “Flor da Rosa” had its origin on a ill knight which fiancée, whose name was “Rosa” (“rose”) offered him a beautiful Rose. Nevertheless, contrary to the knight’s illness, it was Rose who deceased first, causing the greatest grief to the knight. He was often found crying over Rose’s grave and once on his death-bed he asked nothing but that the flower his beloved Rose had offered him would accompanied him to his tomb and that to that place the name “Flor da Rosa” (Rose’s flower) would be given, in homage to the love of his life.

Flor da Rosa is a picturesque small village with small rural houses painted in white with coloured bands around the windows and the doors, surrounded by a lovely natural landscape, where peace of mind rules.

Flor da Rosa is also quite famous for its handicraft, mainly for its pottery and granite objects, where tradition still is what it used to be, and old techniques and knowledge have passed around generations.
