Information

Located in Criação Velha, on the amazing Pico Island, Azores Archipelago, this Regional Natural Monument is a cave with volcanic origins, with about 5km extension, consisting in one of the biggest in the entire Archipelago.

Discovered in 1990, this is the largest lava tube known in Portugal. The main tunnel has about 4480 meters long, with heights that arise to 15 meters.
The Cave was probably originated by the lava expelled by a volcanic eruption, in Cabeço Bravo. In its interior it is possible to observe curious geological structures such as stalactites, lava stalagmites, lateral tiers and lava balls.

The visit to the Cave should be accompanied by official Guides, and the entrance is made through the “Algar da Ponte”, making way to a trip into the geological curiosities and the geology delights.
